The aim of the development of BrainCAD  was to combine the advantages of image registration and fusion methods commonly used in the field of medical imaging with the professional OpenGL-based visualization and VOI delineation. To facilitate the simple application of multimodal ·data manipulation, efforts were made to construct a user-friendly GUI.

According to these requirements, BrainCAD accepts Analyze and MINC  image files, and handles the MNI transformation and landmark files too.  Special toolboxes have been elaborated for landmark-based and  "WYSIWYG"-like 3D registration, ROI/VOI delineation and some useful slice dumper facilities supporting documentation. BrainCAD offers a special "dual-tail" palette for the simultaneous display of Student-t values of both activated and deactivated areas calculated by PET or fMRI statistical analysis.

Fast visualization, including the smooth rotation and zooming of 3D objects, is based on the hardware accelerated OpenGL volume and surface-rendering algorithms. The latter has been complemented with a surface extraction procedure and a parametric surface visualization option to display functional data on an anatomical surface.

Features

The GUI elements of the different image processing techniques are arranged into toolboxes:

  • VOI toolbox: This toolbox has been devised for simple, synchronized or image fusion-based ROI delineation and analysis. From this toolbox an advanced surface-rendering 3D visualization technique is available.
  • Resample Toolbox: This creates a new volume from an existing one by using the specified voxel sizes, voxel numbers and offset values (resample) or separates a 3D part of the volume (reshape).
  • Slice Dumper Toolbox: This arranges slices of the selected volume on the screen, using the specified interpolation method.
  • Transform Toolbox: transforms the input volume using the manually adjusted affine transformation. Upon changing transformation parameters, the effect is visualized in real time. Using this toolbox in fused visualization mode results in a useful registration tool, as well.
  • Registration Toolbox: This is an implementation of the MNI's landmark based registration method (register), extended with some landmark manipulation tools.
